The Horseley family estate was purchased in 1792 by three entrepreneurs to develop coal mining. They extended the canals to provide transport, and then moved into iron making around 1808 and started manufacturing marine steam engines and iron boats in about 1817. Next came cast iron bridges in 1816 with a swing bridge in East India Docks, London, and many more bridges over the following years for the canal railway systems and for countries overseas. Front board has a few light marks on it. Spine ends and outer corner edges are bumped. Some of the pages are rough-cut at front and bottom edges. Webbing is showing at hinge between pages 80 and 81, but there is no looseness. At the front edge some of the rough-cut pages are browned just along the edge, and some have nicks along the front edge. Foxing on the endpapers, and some of the pages have a little foxing. Neat annotations in ink by front edge on a few of the pages. Pasted inside front board are two bookseller's label. Front free endpaper has a small piece of browned newspaper cutting pasted. Family trees in ink and pencil on either side of the Index title-page. On back of last index page dates and names written in ink, opposite is a pasted page of the same. On one of the publisher's books page is pasted a piece of paper again with date and information written in ink. On back endpapers written information in ink. Previous owner's name on half-title page and on back of this page are dates and names in ink. A good tight book. Plus a small booklet "John Amphlett of Clent. An Appreciation by John Humphreys. Full Leather. Rebound spine with five raised bands. Leather boards have decorated pattern along edges and a gilt line around edges. Boards are rubbed around edges. Hinge is showing inside front and back boards, but the book is still very tight, no looseness. Pages are browned. A few of the pages have light smudge marks on them (finger marks?). Some foxing on front endpapers and title-page, and a few of the pages have some foxing. A few pages have annotations, a line (faded by age to light brown) by the text at front edge, On page 26 and 27 the titles and page numbers are partly missing. Pages 83 and 85 have a small tear at front edge. Page 95 has the word Physician crossed out and the word Chaplain written next to it. Page 114 has a very tiny hole. Marbled endpapers. Endpaper inside front board has marks where a label has been removed. A good book for it's journey of 350 years. Preface has four-and-a-half pages, plus 128pp. Continuation of the title - With a Chronological Discourse of His Straits and dangerous Adventures into France, and His Removes from place to place till His return into England, with the most Remarkable Memorials since, to this present September, 1660. On title page - Printed by F.G. for Nathaniel Brook, and are to be sold at the Angel in Cornhill, 1660. Kings Charles II escape from Worcester during the Civil War. 138pp, plus 36 pages not numbered. With numerous coloured drawings throughout the book by the author, plus some maps. The author was born in Poland. In 1940 he to England and trained as a fighter pilot. In 1943, with a group of Polish pilots, he volunteered to go to North Africa where he and the others fought alongside the British 145 Squadron. In 1944 he was promoted to Squadron Leader of 316 Squadron. In September of 1944, during a flight over Holland, his plane caught fire and he was forced to bale out. He was captured and taken to Stalag Luft I prisoner of war camp. It was during the seven months in this camp that he wrote what he called his ‘Log Book’ Prisoner of War. The journal was done by Arct purely to amuse his fellow inmates and to provide release and relaxation for himself. During his war service he received two important Polish decorations for bravery in the field, the Virtuti Militari and the Krzyz Walecznych, the latter four times.

He was captured by pirates and shipwrecked off the New England coast, and in 1616 he published a map of the coast. Smith was also famous for capturing the affections of Pocahontas and was saved from being clubbed to death. He also published the first practical handbook for seaman in the English language.
