Sir Edward Dunlop, a surgeon, known as 'Weary', became a hero to thousands of British prisoners of war on the Burma-Thailand 'Death Railway' during World War II. During three years as a prisoner of war, he organised hospital camps in Java and on the railway in Thailand.
