Previous owner's gold label on front free endpaper. Dustjacket in good condition, spine ends rubbed and a little rubbed along front top edge, cellotape along top spine edge and by back top outer corner edge. 164pp, including Appendices and Bibliography. With 26 illustrations. Including Chronology from May 1895 to 5 June 1900. The story of the successful defence of the town of Ladysmith by a small garrison of the Gordon Highlanders, helped by Captain Percy Scott of HMS Terrible whose inventive genius in adapting naval guns for shore-based use was largely instrumental in keeping the Boers at bay. The author's father, was only sixteen at the time and the youngest member of HMS Powerful's naval brigade. Much of the material in this book is drawn from his siege log and the letters and diaries of three fellow officers. Price:
