With 24 pages of illustrations, and 5 folding maps plus 3 full-page maps. The 19th-cnetury naval operation that explored vast tracts of the Pacific Ocean, including a new southern continent soon to be named Antarctica. Yet one of the largest and most successful voyages of discovery ended up in a series of acrimonious courts-martial aboard a ship-of-the-line anchored in New York harbour. The Expedition was commanded by the controversial, insecure and egotistical Lieutenant Charles Wilkes. For four years, the six sailing ships and 346 men of the Expedition, including scientists and artists covered the Pacific from top to bottom. They surveyed 280 islands, brought back more specimens and artefacts than all three of James Cook's voyages combined. Price:
