Formed in March 1979, the Society exists chiefly to provide opportunities for those interested in the life and writings of Francis Brett Young to meet, correspond and share their enjoyment of the author's works. The Society has about 700 members world-wide.

Full members of the Trust receive a 32 page bi-monthly magazine, The Smethwick Telephone which brings members up to date with the activities of the Trust and contains stories and articles on Smethwick's history..
