Signed by the author on title page. Henry Wriothesley, Earl of Southampton, was known to the world as Shakespeare's patron. His interest in later life was the colonisation of Virginia, he gave freely his time, money to the expeditions and settlements, becoming Treasurer of the Virginia Company and being commemorated for his efforts in the places named after him in the New World, Bermuda and in Virginia itself. His participation in Essex's conspiracy against Elizabeth I nearly cost him his head and landed him in the Tower for what remained of her reign.
